In 1918 Karen Blixen met the English aristocrat and army officer Denys Finch Hatton (1887-1931), who was a trader and safari leader in East Africa. The meeting led to the start of a long love affair, the nature of which is apparent in Karen Blixen's Letters from Africa; she writes, for example, to her brother Thomas Dinesen on August 3 1924: "I believe that for all time and eternity I am bound to Denys, to love the ground he walks upon, to be happy beyond words when he is here, and to suffer worse than death many times when he leaves..."
