In a small village in Kundapur taluk, sits a nondescript eatery by the wayside. If you step in, you will find Mr. Subramanya Holla hunched over a large cast iron pan, ladling batter, smearing masala, lashing streams of ghee and throwing in chunks of butter to make a special benne masala dosae. It’s a craft that he has mastered over 43 years, and he serves only the dosae and a sajjige vade alongside, that too for only four hours each evening! But such is the popularity of Guru Canteen, Halady that people don't mind changing their travel routes just to get a taste of his dosae. On my recent visit to South Kanara, I too made a 100-kilometer return trip to experience this dosae at this family-run eatery. Was it worth the effort? Well, I polished two butter laden, utterly scrumptious, flavourful dosae back to back!
