The history of the Old Fashioned Cocktail may suggest that it’s the greatest cocktail of all time. Even the word “Cocktail” was based on the recipe for the Old Fashioned. During the early 1800’s though, it was known as a “Bitter Sling”. The recipe required Spirit, Bitters, Sugar, and Water. Sounds familiar, Right?
The modern version of the Old fashioned recipe is very similar to the original, but DID YOU KNOW, the earliest version of the cocktail wasn’t always made with Whiskey.
In fact, It was often ordered with many different base spirits. It wasn’t uncommon for Rum, Gin, or even Brandy to be used instead of whiskey.
That’s the rabbit hole we’ve been diving down these past few weeks (and the next few).
The Old Fashioned: Part 3, Brandy.
The Drink
Brandy Old Fashioned
Add,
2 Sugar Cubes to your mixing glass
3-4 Dashes of Angostura Bitters
½ Orange Wheel
1 Maraschino/Luxardo Cherry
To your mixing glass, and muddle.
Be careful not to muddle the orange pith. This will make the drink bitter.
Add 2 oz of American Brandy to the mixing glass and stir.
Add crushed ice to your Rocks Glass ( ½ full)
Pour Old fashioned into the glass.
Fill the rest of the glass with ice. Leave 1/2in from the lip of the glass.
Choose your floater
Normal/Boring:Splash of soda water
Sweet: Splash of Lemon/Lime soda
Sour: Spash of a Sour/Grapefruit Soda or Sour mix
Press: Splash of Equal Parts Soda Water and either Lemon/Lime or Sour Grapefruit Soda. You can do all three too.
Garnish with ½ Wheel of Orange, and a cherry. Can also garnish with olives/pickled brussels sprouts, or in our case, a cube of Wisconsin Cheddar.
Drink.
All of these Brandy Old Fashioned variants really have me on the fence on whether or not I prefer Brandy to Whiskey in an Old Fashioned. It’s generally a little sweeter, but sometimes that's what the doctor orders.
Try them out and let me know what you think.
