Neil Jordan’s breakthrough film is a brilliant, film-noirish love story. Bob Hoskins plays George, a small-time loser just released from prison, who begins looking for a job, but finds that his time in prison has reduced his stature in the criminal underworld. The only job he can get is as a chauffeur to enigmatic, high class call girl Simone (Cathy Tyson). George becomes fascinated by Simone and when she asks agrees to help her, but he soon finds himself on a dangerous quest through the sordid underworld of London where love is deemed a weakness to be exploited and betrayed, and where they both end up in trouble with Mortwell (Michael Caine), the local kingpin.
