Ballast Water is essential for the safe operation of ships at sea. However, ballast water may play host to a variety of aquatic species which may be harmful to marine environments. This training package explains the practical aspects of Ballast Water Exchange and Management, making seafarers, ship owners and operators aware of the IMO Convention requirements.

The programme explains the environmental reasons which have led to the development of the IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention. This provides a means of limiting potential damage to or destruction of the marine habitat into which ballast water is discharged.
All ships must comply with the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) and US legal requirements. So users of this training package will how the BWM Convention D-1 and D-2 standards relate to ballast water management on board their vessels.
For older ships, ballast water exchange is permitted and the package explains the three types of exchange process – flow through, dilution and sequential. It indicates the main issues to consider when exchanging such as trim, over and under-pressuring tanks, potential hull stress and the need for an appropriate exchange plan.
