Walking Across America

CINCINNATI (Brad Underwood) -- Step by step, Scott Star and Matthias Klima navigated their way through the East End. Before the journey began, these two were complete strangers."We Skyped a few times and we first met at the airport, said Scott Star. Some people might find it sketchy, but we got to know each other through Skype.Scott is from Queens, New York and the other, Matthias, is an 18-year-old kid from Bavaria, Germany. Both had planned separate trips to walk coast to coast, however the common goal has brought them together. "Ive never been to the United States, said Matthias. This is my first time, just flew here for this trip." They walk about 17 miles a day and for Scott, this walk is personal."I have Crohn's Disease and my sister has Crohn's disease and I have a cousin with ulcerative colitis, so it is a cause that is near to my heart," said Scott. Star's goal is 0,000, the money collected will go to the Crohn's Colitis Foundation of America.Along the way the two have faced some challenges, mainly weather, but together they keep going. "You always have obstacles on your way and you always have to overcome them every day, said Matthias. We had some really tough times but we always keep going." "Some bigger obstacles might be finding a place to sleep at night or finding roads with shoulders and sidewalks," said Scott. And just a few days ago, the duo found a cell phone ringing on the ground in Bainbridge Ohio. "It came out that a woman had lost her phone two days ago and we found it. We ended up sleeping in their yard, said Matthias. So that's how we came to our sleeping arrangement for the night."Most of the trek has been along U.S. 50 near the American Discovery Trail, the second half of the 2800 mile journey the two will take the famous Route 66 to California.
