(23 Aug 2017) An American Civil Liberties Union attorney says the organization will be very cautious going forward in representing armed protest groups in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.
ACLU Senior Staff Attorney Lee Rowland stopped short of saying they will no longer represent any armed protest groups.
After enjoying a wave of support for fighting the Trump administration's travel ban, the ACLU has found itself in hot water over its support of white nationalists' demand to rally in downtown Charlottesville earlier this month. The ACLU persuaded a judge to let the Aug. 12 march go forward.
A board member of the ACLU's Virginia branch, Waldo Jaquith, resigned, tweeting, "What's legal and what's right are sometimes different" and "I won't be a fig leaf for the Nazis."
The violence in Charlottesville has brought a backlash that's sparked discord among the ACLU membership and forced it to confront the issue of demonstrators who show up at protests with guns.
But the ACLU position in Charlottesville was consistent with the New York City-based group's history of defending free-speech rights for protesters on all spectrums.
It is reminiscent of the one that followed the ACLU's 1978 defense of a neo-Nazi group that wanted to march through Skokie, Illinois, a Chicago suburb with a large number of Holocaust survivors.
