A CITY OF FAITH CALLED NAKHON SI THAMMARAT : Spirit of Asia (November 29, 2020)

..For over a thousand years, Thailand’s southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat has developed from the time that it was an early kingdom to the time that it became one of the prosperous port cities of the Eastern world. As a centre of trade and exchange that was on the receiving end of foreign influences, Nakhon Si Thammarat also delivered its own cultural influences to other regions.
The town then hosted the arrival of the Muslim population, as recorded 400 years ago. The governor brought troops to invade Syburi, or the state of Kedah in Malaysia. The Malay prisoner-of-war population came to settle in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Here, they assisted in developing the town, especially in the district of Talad Kaek. Nakhon Si Thammarat’s pluralistic society that we see today has roots going back to this period in history when Thai and Malays lived alongside each other.
This small space situated at the Talad Kaek Intersection is home to an abundant diversity of ethnicities, religions, and ways of life. This community is a model of pluralism that exhibits the value of peace-making and collective support. The building of a truly inclusive society can be found here in this city of faith called…Nakhon Si Thammarat.
