Dedicated to soranis-sunshadow over on tumblr, who put forth the idea to make a video with Sound of Silence focussing on the Horde Clones of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. But also dedicated to the entire Horde Clone fandom over there, who kept me inspired and driven to finish this all those months.
This was a labour of love that took me most of 4 months to complete, drawing nearly every day.
The Horde Clones lived in the Hivemind every day of their existence. They weren't allowed personal thoughts, feelings or identities. They were shaped as tools and cattle for Horde Prime to use as he wished.
Every second of their lives, the Hivemind was there, thrumming in their minds, allowing them not a single moment's peace and quiet. And they never knew that they didn't have that.
Until one of them was accidentally cut off. Hordak, the one defective clone who should have perished, yet lived. And lived in silence, longing to return to all that was familiar to him. As we saw in the show, returning to Prime, returning to the only world he'd ever been at home in, was Hordak's entire existence. He lived to return home. He waged war to return home. And yet when he did, we only saw fear.
For upon returning, he finally saw the one thing he had been blind to all that time: his home was a prison of mind and body, not at all as he remembered it. How could it be, if his only memories of the place were tainted by the interference of the Hivemind that had been his entire existence before Etheria. Yet, when he finally realised this, it was too late. He was pulled back in, made to forget, made to fit the mold once more.
Forced back into the Sound of Silence, the Hivemind, the silencing of heart and soul. The denial of individuality.
Wrong Hordak, too, was wrenched out of this Hivemind. We saw him terrified by this, we saw him heartbroken at the sudden disappearance of the world he'd known, frightened by this sudden silence and loneliness. Yet he was not alone, and the people around him helped him through this. They helped him see what life could be like, what life ought to be like, outside the oppressive Hivemind. But he couldn't help his brothers in the same way. He could not reach them if he tried. They were still prisoners, and Wrong Hordak couldn't do anything to stop that.
Finally, Horde Prime's final hour. The clones stationed on Etheria would be hurt in the destruction as much as the Etherians would be, and even as they fought and bled and even died in service of their god, Horde Prime, they listened to him through the Hivemind. His mad ravings in his final moments, his desperate attempt to take the entire universe down with him once he knew he could not win, the clones heard it all, and would have been greatly distressed. Horde Prime, the almighty, all-powerful, all-seeing and all-knowing Emperor of the Known Universe... fallible.
Horde Prime perished and so did the Hivemind. Gone was the constant noise inside their heads, gone was the force oppressing and controlling them.
For the first time in their lives, the Horde Clones knew the true Sound of Silence: freedom.
