Attracted by its healthy air, fertile soils, and bountiful seas, the peninsula began to be settled mainly by Lowland Scottish Presbyterian immigrants during the seventeenth century under King James the first’s 1610 Plantation of Ulster plan. And come they did, so by 1622 the Scots made up some 60 percent of the population of Islandmagee, which allowed them to begin to dominate the region’s socio-political fabric. With them came their Scottish Reformist attitudes towards suppressing witchcraft, overwhelming the Catholic Irish tolerance for traditional cultural cunning folk.

By 1711, the majority of Islandmagee would have viewed witchcraft as the work of the Devil, requiring purging from the entire community. Yet, by the early eighteenth century, Enlightenment ideas were slowly moderating the views of the educated classes. Some Anglican theologians were preaching tolerance, viewing demon possession as a sickness.

Had the population still been mostly Catholic, would these witch trials have been prosecuted so vigorously?
