Driven by political bloodlust and personal insanity, Pope Stephen VI committed the unthinkable: he ordered the rotting corpse of his predecessor, Pope Formosus, to be exhumed after seven months in the grave. The cadaver was dressed in sacred papal vestments, propped up on a golden throne, and forced to stand trial for "crimes" against the church.
