Half square triangles are one of the most versatile quilt blocks, but for perfect points you have to trim them carefully. Watch for two different trimming techniques to make perfectly square HST quilt blocks.

Both techniques can be done with just about any quilting ruler you've got--it depends on the size of your half square triangle block! If the ruler has a 45 degree angle line on at least one corner and the edges are longer than your quilt block, then you're good to go.

The first method is when you trim your HST block after you press the seam open. It requires more cuts but may be more precise as you don't have to press it again before piecing the block.

The second method is done with the block still 'closed'--the seam will be pressed open later. This method requires some opaque tape stuck onto the quilt ruler. It is an extra step to get the ruler ready, but then the trimming is faster than the first method.
