Professor P.L.O. Lumumba has publicly expressed his opposition to Raila Odinga's candidacy for the position of African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson. In an interview with Pan African Visions, Lumumba outlined several reasons for his stance:

Domestic Political Motivations: Lumumba believes that Odinga's candidacy is primarily aimed at resolving political issues within Kenya, rather than serving the broader interests of the African continent.

Concerns About Age and Energy: At 80 years old, Odinga may lack the necessary vigor to effectively lead the AUC, according to Lumumba. He suggests that younger Africans should be given the opportunity to serve in such a demanding role.

Campaign Approach: Lumumba criticizes the manner of Odinga's campaign, describing it as divisive and accompanied by unnecessary razzmatazz. He contrasts this with the more orderly campaigns of previous AUC Chairpersons, such as Alpha Oumar Konaré, Jean Ping, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, and Moussa Faki Mahamat.

Previous AU Appointment: Lumumba references Odinga's prior role as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa, noting that he left the position under unclear circumstances. This, coupled with a past instance in 2011 where Odinga's appointment as a peace envoy to Côte d'Ivoire was rejected due to perceived partisanship, raises concerns about his suitability for the AUC Chairperson role.
