Eisinger Poem and Der Alte Baum, Norbert Glanzberg

Описание к видео Eisinger Poem and Der Alte Baum, Norbert Glanzberg

First a poem by Slema Meerbaum Eisinger, who died in Auschwitz at 18years of age, leaving behind a beautiful selection of poems. The Song about the old tree was written by Norbert Glanzberg.
Here are the lyrics in English:

You old tree,
You friend in early days,
You safe haven, my leafgreen tent.
You old tree,
You heard my questions
To you I carried the sorrows of my world.
Quitely safe I played my games,
Your green shadow was a good house.
The bluebird sang in your branches
And bees flew in and out.

You old tree,
You saw my first kiss,
You shared bliss and secrets with me.
You old tree
Hurt by war's shots.
You kept strong and I came back to you.
I leaned my forehead against your bark,
When I came home from the dusty city..
With both of my arms I embraced you and
Looked at your green leafs until my hunger was stilled.

You old tree,
You friend from early days
Your trunk is deaf and your bark dead
No leaf is growing, your branches are breaking,
Like a ghost you stand in the morning light.
Destroyed from all the poisionous rain
You stand there as a witness of our guilt.
It was so good under your green shadow-
It seems to me, my friend,
As if I am dying with you!
