आपल्या स्थलमहात्म्यासाठी प्रसिद्ध असणारा सुवर्णदुर्ग हा कोकणातील महत्त्वाचा जलदुर्ग आहे. दापोली तालुक्यातील हर्णे बंदराजवळ किनाऱ्यापासून अडीचशे मीटर अंतरावर समुद्रात आठ एकरवर हा किल्ला वसला आहे. हर्णे बंदरापासून बोट ठरवून गेल्यास किल्ल्यावर ३० मिनिटांतच पोहोचता येते. कान्होजी आंग्रेची कार्यकिर्तीची सुरूवात व पराक्रम अनुभवलेला हा गडाची सफर पहा .
Throughout history, rulers of each era understood the importance Of the Naval force and recognized the immense need for vigilance on the naval boundaries of their Kingdom. Therefore, for centuries sea forts are protecting the sea routes and the sea coasts as well. The Aangre Family who was known as the Naval Commands of the Konkan coast practically ruled the sea. Over the centuries, many generations of Aangres have fought hard to protect the sea coasts.
Fort Suvarnadurga was the birthplace of Kanhoji Aangre, who was one of the most prominent leaders to receive the honorary ‘Sarkhel’ title from Chattrapati Rajaram. In 1640, Kanhoji’s father Tukoji Aangre was working under Shahaji raja. After the reign of Nijamshahi ended, this part of southern Konkan came under the rule of Adilshahi. After that, Maratha King Shivaji won the Suvarnadurga. However, the narrow walls of the fort might have been built during the Nizam period itself. Later in 1669, the Marathi armada properly repaired Suvarndurga due to which its significance grew. After Kanhoji Aangre became the head of the Marathi Naval Force in 1698, the armada camps were established in Suvarnadurga and Vijaydurga. The Suvrandurga was under the control of the Peshwas until 1731 without any battles being fought over it. Finally, in 1818, Colonel Kennedy, the British officer won the fort from the Peshwas.
