I take a look at the Woolwich Ferry service from the south bank of the Thames.
Two of the three Woolwich ferries are seen arriving and departing, with the third at rest, undergoing some refurbishment work alongside.
'Ernest Bevin' departs and 'James Newman' comes in and 'John Burns' is moored alongside.
These ferries were built in 1963 by Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Co and replaced paddle-steamer ferries built between 1923 and 1930.|
They use Voith-Schneider propulsion systems for manoeuvrability and motive power comes from 7-cylinder Mirrlees National diesel engines, delivered to a cycloidal propeller which is fitted centrally at either end.
A new ferry service (likely to have tolls levied, whereas this service has been free since 1885 by Act of Parliament) is due to commence, running between Beckton and Thamesmead and was announced in 2012 to commence this year, 2017.
So these will likely be the last of over 100 years of Woolwich ferries shuttling to and fro.
