Traditionally, human motion is studied by analyzing video data. At CITEC
we went a step further and also study the tactile profile of human
manipulation. This adds a completely new dimension to the understanding
of human motion control. To this end, we developed a high-speed tactile
sensor array which can record spatially resolved pressure profiles at
frame rates of up to 1.9 kHz with the sensitivity to detect loads as low
as 1g/mm². The modular design of the sensor system allows to build
large-scale sensor surfaces, for example an intelligent table, which can
be used to record the amount and distribution of forces acting onto
objects while they are manipulated. This gives us information about
human force control which cannot be monitored by traditional sensors. In
this demonstration we manipulate a sheet of paper and visualize the
resulting pressure profile using a sensor array of 6400 tactels sampled
at 100 Hz.
