In the context of 2020 sustainability targets, trade and environmental policies are closely linked. As part of the Doha WTO trade negotiations, the EU has pushed for more open trade in environmental goods and services such as renewable energy products, waste water management and energy efficient construction services to encourage the spread of these new technologies around the world.
Despite the fact that a study commissioned by DG Trade (2012) showed that the reduction of non-tariff barriers in all on-going and potential negotiations could provide an increase of EU's GDP of 1.2%, companies are still confronted with both tariff and non-tariff trade barriers.
