Shifting Gears season 2 marks a major qualitative improvement for Tim Allen’s sitcom. While the Shifting Gears premiere set viewership records for ABC, that’s largely because Allen is a natural draw after the successes of beloved past sitcoms Home Improvement and Last Man Standing.
If audiences embraced the new father-daughter sitcom immediately on Allen’s presence alone, Shifting Gears season 1 underperformed with critics for many reasons, namely that the show felt too generic, from the premise to the writing. Luckily, the cast of Shifting Gears has many heavy hitters, including Kat Dennings from CBS’ controversial sitcom 2 Broke Girls.
Shifting Gears has never been afraid to wink at past Allen roles, but increasingly, it’s realized that might be the series’ superpower, and the show can use nostalgic callbacks better than any other sitcom presently airing.

No current sitcom uses nostalgia quite as deftly as Tim Allen’s Shifting Gears. The ABC comedy isn’t out to reinvent the wheel—it’s embracing one of TV’s oldest and most reliable engines: the multicam sitcom. While streaming TV has struggled to recapture multicam magic, Shifting Gears thrives on it.
The show realizes it’s built around a star whose persona hasn’t changed since the ‘90s. Allen’s Matt is a man out of step with the times, but while his views may not have changed, the times have.
Shifting Gears season 2 makes Matt more palatable without fundamentally changing him. It’s what the show is trying to do on a more macro level: tweak the classic sitcom formula just enough to keep it fresh for modern audiences.
