There are several reasons why some people have so much success with ketogenic diets, and some are not really unique to ketogenic diets. Its a very simple diet to follow. Youre at McDonalds…youll be having the cheeseburger without the bun. Ketosis is all or nothing, so youre not going to be eating half a bun even if you like McDonalds hamburger buns. Theres an awful lot of food you cant eat, and that includes most unhealthy food. Youll be finding yourself thinking how nice it would be to grab a granola bar from the store next door, then realizing you cant have it, then wondering if the bison jerky is worth having. All of these effects will fade as people find more and more ways to chaet without chaeting, like keto brownies and cauliflower pizza. Many diets wor.k in a similar way. Packaged meal diets for example are simple to follow. There are also some real reasons why ketogenic diets are different from plain old low carb diets. When you eat fa.t, the body stores it as fa.t, then burns it later. If you eat carbohydrates, they are stored as energy up to a point, then the excess is stored as fa.t. If theyre not losing or gaining weit, the ketogenic dieter is both building and burning more fa.t than the balanced dieter. Ketones are a waste product of fa.t burning. The body can co.nvert them back into fa.t, but if fa.t burning is very high, blood ketones get high enough to cause physiological changes. The kidneys will filter ketones, and youll have ketones in your urine. As ketones have calories, at one time it was believed that this might help people lose weit. But when they crunched the numbers, it wasnt enough to matter. You will however create an awful lot of urine to flush out all those ketones, and can lose a lot of water weit. Its not really good for you, but sometimes you really do want to lose 5 pounds in a week, and this is the way you do that. Ketones mess with your brain. They are an appetite suppressant. Youre tricking your body into thinking your starving. Note that eating carbs—even a tiny amount of carbs—will make you ravenous. Ketones also cause brain fog and cousion, but some people experience it as euphoria, and actually like the feeling. Hopefully you will be one of those people. But the majority of people who try the keto diet give up, and the majority that dont give up will gain the weit back again. So I dont think it wor.ks all that well after all. If it appeals to you and you use it wisely and dont co.nsider it a magic bullet, keto dieting can be very successful.
