Chopping Grey Box Log with Restored Hytest Axes

Описание к видео Chopping Grey Box Log with Restored Hytest Axes

Decided to test out some of my restored Hytest axes on this well-seasoned old Eucalyptus Microcarpa (Grey Box) log.
This wood is meant to be around 15 on the janka scale, and as you can see from this video it is very tough when dry. It makes excellent firewood as it is very dense and generates a lot of heat when burned.
The only harder wood in our region is Casuarina (Buloke/Sheoak) which I have never tried to chop.
The Hytest Craftsman axes were intended to be all around work tools for farmers, and have a thinner bit than the professional felling grade Hytest Forester model, which means that they bite well but do not throw chips as effectively as the thicker wedge-shaped bits such as the Kelly Dandenong or Forester.
My axes held up pretty well to this chopping and did not sustain any chips or edge rolls, but did need touching up afterwards. A testament to the steel Hytest was using in the 1940s-50s era.
The work took me about an hour with a break between sides.
