The traditional process of working with watercolor is to paint from light to dark. Paint around whites and then successively darker colors to build up the painting. This means that the artist must plan the values (the lights and darks) before starting the painting. In this week’s ArtSpeaks Studio Moment we talk about how this process works and the alternatives of using opaque paints to paint in lights or lifting out darker colors to create light shapes. Using examples, we explain the benefits and problems with each approach.
