MGB Tuneup Part 2: Break Out the Dwell Meter and Timing Light

Описание к видео MGB Tuneup Part 2: Break Out the Dwell Meter and Timing Light

One of the biggest misconceptions about old cars is that a tune-up on a Triumph TR6 or an Austin-Healey involves changing the plugs and turning a screwdriver on the carburetors. That's simply not enough, and it's a large part of the reason why they have a reputation for being unreliable. We take an MGB through a more comprehensive procedure.

In this video, we look at the timing. Some distributors are 100% electronic--including the advance, which is computer controlled. For most, though, it's important to know that a Pertronix or a FAST XR-700 does NOT control timing advance. That's still done by weights and springs inside the distributor. In other words, replacing your points with electronic components won't always solve your problems, and there's more you need to check. We'll touch on how to use a dwell meter and a timing light to help you get your ignition timed and verify it's working.

We'll continue through until we (finally) get to adjusting the carbs... but follow along. You can tweak those SUs as much as you like, but whether you have an XKE or a Spitfire, your car can run terribly if the distributor isn't working properly!
