Описание к видео Bilingualities: In Many Tongues | Akhil Katyal, Kunal Basu and Anukrti Upadhyay with Tanuj Solanki

Bilingualities: In Many Tongues | Akhil Katyal, Kunal Basu and Anukrti Upadhyay in conversation Tanuj Solanki | Presented by ABP Live

India is a multilingual nation, existing in a constant and ongoing state of translation. Four writers who express themselves with proficiency in more than one language in their literary pursuits speak of how they negotiate the distances between their mother tongues and learned languages, and how they communicate their creativity in both. While poet and academic Akhil Katyal’s writing and poetry straddles both Hindi and English, Kunal Basu feels no need to choose between English and Bangla, as both literary streams run concurrently within him. Anukrti Upadhyay’s work, which covers cultures as diverse as Rajasthan and Japan, is published in Hindi and English. Tanuj Solanki scales the binaries between his mother tongue, Hindi and the chosen language of expression, English. In a session of readings and conversation, they speak of their discipline, writing process, and the linguistic and literary worlds they carry within them.

Akhil Katyal is a Delhi based writer and translator who has authored Like Blood on the Bitten Tongue: Delhi Poems and How Many Countries Does the Indus Cross. He has also translated Ravish Kumar’s book of prose poems, Ishq Mein Shahar Hona as A City Happens in Love. Akhil was the International Writing Fellow at the University of Iowa in Fall 2016 and was awarded the Vijay Nambisan Poetry Fellowship for the year 2021.

Kunal Basu is the author of several critically acclaimed novels, including The Miniaturist and Kalkatta and a collection of stories titled The Japanese Wife, the lead story of which has been made into an award-winning film. His work has been widely translated and nominated for prestigious awards. He has also written novels in Bengali. Born in Kolkata and educated in India and the United States, he lives in Oxford and Kolkata.

Anukrti Upadhyay writes fiction and poetry in both English and Hindi. Her English works, twin novellas Daura and Bhaunri and novel Kintsugi have been published by the 4th Estate imprint of Harpercollins in India and have been nominated for multiple awards. Upadhyay has been awarded the Sushila Devi Award for the best work of fiction written by a woman author in 2020 for Kintsugi. Her Hindi works, a short story collection, Japani Sarai, and novel, Neena Aunty, have been published by Rajpal and Sons. Her writings have appeared in Scroll.in, Kitaab.sg, The Bombay Review, The Bangalore Review, The Bilingual Window and several Hindi publications.

Tanuj Solanki is the author of three books of fiction. His most recent novel, The Machine is Learning, was longlisted for the JCB Prize for Literature 2020. Tanuj's short fiction has been published in The Caravan, The Hindu Business Line, DNA, Out of Print, and several other publications. In 2019, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar for his short-story collection, Diwali in Muzaffarnagar.
