The Ghazwa of Banu Qaynuqa refers to an early conflict during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) between the Muslim community in Medina and the Jewish tribe of Banu Qaynuqa. This event occurred in 624 CE, shortly after the Muslim victory at the Battle of Badr. It is considered significant in the early development of the Islamic state in Medina and its interactions with local tribes.

Background:
After the Hijrah (migration) to Medina, the Prophet Muhammad established a constitution known as the Charter of Medina. This agreement sought to create a harmonious relationship between the Muslim migrants (Muhajirun), the local Muslim supporters (Ansar), and the Jewish tribes of Medina. The treaty stipulated mutual defense and non-aggression, ensuring that all parties would coexist peacefully and support one another against external threats.

The immediate cause of the conflict was a specific incident involving a Muslim woman in the Banu Qaynuqa marketplace. Reports suggest that a member of the tribe harassed her, leading to an altercation in which a Muslim man who came to her defense was killed. In retaliation, a Muslim killed the offender, and the situation spiraled into open hostilities.

The Siege:
In response, the Prophet Muhammad and his companions besieged the fortresses of the Banu Qaynuqa for 15 days. The tribe eventually surrendered, and their lives were spared. Instead of executing them, the Prophet allowed them to leave Medina with their possessions, but they were permanently exiled.
