After months of hiding from the NATO bombing campaign, residents of Belgrade are now seeking shelter from a different kind of siege.

An early summer heatwave has engulfed the Yugoslav capital since Tuesday.

Belgrade residents were caught by surprise by temperatures soaring up to 36 degrees celsius in a heatwave that engulfed the city on Tuesday.

People took to the streets in droves to enjoy the sun or search for cool patches of shade.

Some sought the relief of a refreshing drink or a dip in the newly-opened public pools.

The mercury has soared unexpectedly to record temperatures and is expected to get up to 100 degrees fahrenheit or more.
