Yesterday’s wild swimming adventure took me deep into the heart of the Peak District, following the path of Wild Swimming Walks No. 14 near the village of Hathersage. The route traced the River Derwent as it winds through a lush, peaceful valley framed by dramatic hillsides and timeless countryside. The walk was serene and invigorating, with sweeping views on either side and bursts of early summer life at every turn.
Just after the village and along the Derwent I crossed the old stone steps across the river a moment that brought real adrenaline. The water was fast, swirling just below, and each step felt uncertain. I wasn’t sure if the stones would hold or if I’d slip. It was a little scary but also exhilarating, a reminder of the wildness and unpredictability of nature. That crossing made the calm swim that followed feel even more rewarding.
As I neared the village, the river revealed its perfect spot calm, clear, and inviting. I took the plunge, surrounded by the sound of birds, the rustle of the trees, and the gentle flow of water around me. It was absolutely magical both grounding and freeing. After the swim, I wandered through the charming village itself, soaking in its character, history, and beauty. The entire experience was a blend of physical refreshment and peaceful connection with nature.
