Tomatoes touched Rs 250 per kilo in one of the Indian states Uttarakhand. Across India this humble vegetable is costing on an average anywhere between Rs 150 – Rs 200. It is in a way contradictory to the excess that one has witnessed many times when farmers would feel it is better to throw the tomatoes that they grew in their farmlands on the roads as the market price is so low that it doesn’t make any sense for them to spend money even on transport.
What is the reason behind these contradictory scenarios? Why is the cost on tomatoes so high today?
