India and Bhutan Border Bindu Barrage || Bindu Dam on Jaldhaka River

Bindu is the last village on the Indian side bordering Bhutan. It is known for its landscape with Jaldhaka River, hills ,forests and cardamom plantation . There is a conjunction of three streams at Bindu. The three streams are known as Bindu Khola, Dudh Pokhri and Jaldhaka that originate from the Kupup lake, a small glacial lake in sikkim. The combined streams meet here to form the Jaldhaka river. The altitude of bindu is around 2000 feet.

Reaching here is easy because it’s accessible by road. Nearest airport is Bagdogra airport (114 K.M), nearest rail railway station is New Mal Jn. distance is 50 KM. around one and half hrs. driving through Chapramari forest, Kumani road and Khunia-Jhalong road. The main railway station New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is just 103KM away. It’s around 3 hour drive from NJP and the journey to the Himalayan hamlet is an unforgettable experience in itself. Traveling through the thick deciduous forest of Chapramari , while spotting some untamed animals like bison and elephant. On the way tourists can also visit a place called Gairibas Diascorrea Plantation. Located 104 km from Siliguri, visitors can easily reach here by hiring a car from Siliguri.

There is a dam known as Bindu Dam (India’s second oldest dam) over the Jaldhaka river which is used for controlling water supply to the Jaldhaka Hydel Project at Jhalong and acts as a bridge for crossing over to Bhutan. However, one can cross the dam only by foot. Recently steel bridge construction will be done so that a light weight vehicle can pass over.
