When he was raised to the nobility he adopted the “title” Wellington because his elder brother, William, already used Wellesley. He did not change his name. (Except he did change his name at one point along with the rest of his family from Wesley to Wellesley because it sounded more aristocratic)

So his first title was in 1809: Arthur Wellesley, Viscount Wellington of Talavera, and of Wellington in the County of Somerset, before being made an Earl in February 1812, then a Marquess in October 1812, and finally a Duke in 1814.

His brother who was a British politician, chose Wellington for him because of the similar sounds and because the two villages Wellesley and Wellington are close to each other in Somerset.
