This lecture focuses on exercises to help you identify your skills and domain knowledge or experience as essential components in generating successful business ideas. We explore the viewpoint that skills and experience are sometimes more important than passion. While passion allows you to spend a lot of time and effort on a subject and helps with recruiting, it does not guarantee competence or success. As one venture capitalist suggests, it can be more effective to "Don't follow your passions. Do what you're good at," noting you can always use the weekends for hobbies like painting.
We guide you through uncovering your skills by focusing on specific or generic things you are good at, like programming or public speaking. To determine what qualifies as a skill, you should ask yourself: what could you teach someone so confidently that you could instantly answer an in-depth question about it? Alternatively, determine what you consider yourself an expert at or what subject you are in the top 10% of people who can do. For example, even specific, less "magical" skills like typing 60 words per minute can be recognized and written down.
We also cover the importance of experience, which is often more straightforward and can be identified by reviewing what you have worked on. Experience provides a much shorter learning curve in a business space and may help you gain valuable contacts. A powerful sign of relevant experience is having inside knowledge on an industry—information or an "inside scoop" that the outside world does not know. Ultimately, we aim to combine your passions, skills, experiences, and hobbies to build a pile of information that will be used to generate business ideas that are smart, complete, and have a high probability of success.
