About this Video:

Do you know about antithesis? We use it in English all the time. Do you know the typical intonation patterns when using antithesis? In this video, these are exactly the things that I’m going to help you with.
…..

Antithesis can mean the opposite of something, or something that is being compared to better strengthen an argument. For instance:

‘Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it’ Martin Luther Kig Jr said in a speech. Here hatred and love are antithetical and paralyses and releases are antithetical.

We use intonation is a very specific way to mark and compare antithetical words, in that they both are spoken typically with a higher pitch in comparison to other words in the sentence, but the pitch is very slightly different on each of the antithetical words to show their relationship, so ‘hatred’ and ‘love’, and then ‘paralyses’ and ‘releases’.

Here are some other uses of antithesis in speech:

When using antithesis for the same word that is modified by a prefix or suffix, be aware that the stress in the word can change in order to indicate the difference. For instance:
‘some were E.du.ca.ted; and some were UN.e.du.ca.ted’

Antithesis might also be used to add emphasis:

‘It wasn’t good… it was great! ’
‘There are versions that are brilliant… and then there’s this! ’

Antithesis can also be shared between two speakers, and the second speaker tends to use a higher pitch on the antithetical word:

A: ‘You never tidy your room’ B: ‘I always tidy my room’

And antithesis can also be heard in ultimatums:

‘If you swear once more, I’m going to walk out’
