It is with the heaviest heart and extreme sadness that I share the passing of “Little Betty,” my Corgi and bestest friend. She would have been 16 years old today.

Known as “Ms. Betty” in her later years, she was the neighborhood watch. When the front door was open, she would sit at the glass storm door and bark at every car, delivery person, kid, and leaf that passed “her front yard.” She lost her left eye in a “fetch” altercation at 8 years old, but it never slowed her down—though I’d be reminded of it whenever she turned her head left and bumped into something she hadn't seen.

She was my redeployment dog after I spent nearly a year in Iraq. I found her with a breeder in East Texas shortly after coming home. She was there to celebrate when I was at my best and there to snuggle me when I was at my worst. If it weren’t for her and her fur siblings, I sometimes think I may not have been here to write this now.

Betty was my soul dog, a once-in-a-lifetime "man’s best friend." She enjoyed rib eye steak every year for her birthday. She lived in Texas, Virginia, and Colorado, and visited all the states in between—even traveling as far as California. She would sit in the front yard while I worked on the car, truck, and bikes, never straying further than the sidewalk. She loved to bark, to eat her dog biscuits (or “cookies,” as she knew them), and to nap.

I’ve had other dogs cross the Rainbow Bridge, which was always emotionally distressing, but this one hurts in a significant way. She was the first dog I adopted as an adult and she outlived most of her fur siblings.

She is preceded in death by her fur brother Marley, a Pyrenees mix, and her fur sister, Molly, a German Shepherd mix. Betty is survived by her fur brother Luke, a GSP, and by me, her dog dad.

I love you, Ms. Betty. Enjoy all the cookies across the Rainbow Bridge. 🌈🦴
