The Hustlers Corner SA Podcast with DJ Sbu
He talks to some of the world's best hustlers sharing their stories to inspire a new generation.

Sibulele Sibaca is 24 years old and was born in Cape Town, South Africa. From the day Sibulele was born she experienced the most unconditional love, both from her parents and elder brother. They lived as a happy and content family of four for a long while until Sibulele was 12 years old. She was doing her final year in primary school, with high school at the tip of her tongue when her mother fell ill in May 1996.

Sibulele Sibaca’s mother fell ill at a time when she was trying to figure herself out, she was going to be a teenager very soon and did not like the way that she looked and wanted to change her image…things that most young girls worry about at that age. However, for almost a month, when most girls her age would be playing in the streets of small townships, Sibulele Sibaca would be jumping in the car for the next daunting visiting experience at the hospital. Her mother came out hospital two weeks later, but she looked a lot worse than she was when she was admitted. Everyday Sibulele watched her mother slipping away from her, not knowing what was wrong and there was not a single thing that she could do about it - Sibulele felt completely helpless.

Sibulele questioned her father as to what was going on, what was wrong with her mother? And all he could say was that she was just too young to understand. On June 6th, 1996, Sibulele’s mother passed away. She realized that she had never got the opportunity to get to know her mother better, and now, she was gone and Sibulele could not bring her back.

Sibulele’s dad quickly made her realize that she had a lot to be thankful for, that she still had him and her brother. She passed primary school with flying colours and got accepted into a really good school in Cape Town. Sibulele’s father was a super parent, he was amazing, and he was her mom and dad in one. Father and daughter grew really close, and he taught Sibulele a lot of things about life that she did not quite understand at the time, which now have enormous value.

The year was 2000, second last year of high school, and Sibulele was very excited. Her father was just as excited as she was, looking forward to Sibulele’s academic results, he knew that she wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer. As an educator by profession, Sibulele’s father took great pride in the results that were presented on her report card at the end of each year, and that year was going to be no different. Sibulele Sibaca’s father fell ill in February 2000 - it felt like she was having dejavu. The very same things that had gone wrong with her mom, were going wrong with her dad. Sibulele didn’t spend much time with her father, in fact she did not even have the opportunity to take care of him, because before she knew it, he had passed away.

Sibulele still did not know what had happened to her mom and now her dad had just died. She hated her father for lying to her when he said he would be around for her 21st birthday, that he would be around to watch her graduate and that he would be around to walk her down the aisle. She hated her father even more when she heard via the grapevine, that he had died of AIDS and that he had infected her mother - she hated him for killing her mother.

In 2001 Sibulele miraculously passed Matric, not with the best of results, not ones that her father would be proud of, but she didn’t care. He had died and had not explained to her as to why things were the way they were. For a couple of months after that she was very confused about what it was she wanted to do with her life, if anything at all.

In April 2002 Sibulele was introduced to an organization called LoveLife, which completely changed her life and the way she saw it. LoveLife gave her a platform to shine and do what she loved doing and that is to change and inspire the lives of young people. Sibulele began doing a motivational programme in the Western Cape that taught young people how to be focused, stay grounded at all times, to believe in themselves their visions and their goals. It is amazing how when you start helping others and changing their lives, that your life is changed at the very same time. Sibulele applied to study Communication Science, something she would not have applied for if her father were still alive, but something she knew he would have been very proud of anyway.
