'In November' is a track from the reeds player Frode Gjerstad's and percussionist Paul Hession's duo record 'May Day', recorded on May 7th, 2003 and released on FMR Records later that year. This release is part of a long series of duos Frode Gjerstad released on that imprint during the 2000s (other duos include reeds players Peter Brotzmann and Sabir Mateen, electronics performer Lasse Marhaug, pipe-organist Nils Henrik Asheim, percussionist Kevin Norton, pianist Borah Bergman, etc...). On this particular record, Gjerstad sticks with saxophones, though many of his other records involve clarinet and bass clarinet.

There's not much one can say about any given performance or excerpt by players such as these. Both are simply wonderful improvisers who bring a ton of energy and musical sensibility to their performances. Each are worth checking out in pretty much any of the many settings each of them explore.

I discovered Gjerstad's music while I was digging deeper into music by the American bassist William Parker, who played in a trio with Gjerstad and drummer Hamid Drake. After hearing their massive (and appropriately-titled) record 'Ultima' on the Cadence label, I grabbed up a number of random discs of Frode's that I found sitting on the shelves of NYC's Downtown Music Gallery, a store that's always maintained good supply lines from esoteric overseas labels like FMR. The aforementioned duo series was somewhat of a revelation for me, a beautiful series of diverse musical explorations that not only opened my ears, but also helped to introduce me to all sorts of different players from a robust European scene of which I had no previous knowledge. Gjerstad has played on a load of different records over the years. Fans of this would probably dig any of a numerous records he's put out playing in duet with the equally-extraordinary drummer Paal Nilssen-Love.

As such, this record was my introduction to Hession, a drummer who's been involved with the European free-improv world since the 1970s. He's performed on a number of great records with players including saxophonists Alan Wilkinson, Mick Beck, Lol Coxhill, and George Haslam, bassist Simon Fell, pianist Borah Bergman, and many others.

Both Gjerstad and Hession also appear on a 2003 Loose Torque record called 'Live at the Termite Club', playing in trio with bassist Nick Stephens.
