TWA Flight 800 remains one of the most tragic and extensively investigated disasters in aviation history. On July 17, 1996, the Boeing 747-100 exploded and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York, just 12 minutes after takeoff from JFK, killing all 230 people on board.
The event sparked a massive four-year investigation that became the benchmark for modern forensic aviation recovery.

Probable Cause: An explosion of flammable fuel/air vapors in the Center Wing Fuel Tank (CWT).

Contributing Factors: The fuel tank design allowed heat from the air conditioning packs (located directly beneath the tank) to increase the volatility of the small amount of fuel remaining in the CWT.

Despite the official conclusion, TWA 800 is a frequent subject of skepticism. Because hundreds of witnesses reported seeing a "flare-up" or a streak of light moving toward the plane, several theories emerged:
The Missile Theory: Many believed a surface-to-air missile (either from a terrorist or accidental "friendly fire" from a Navy vessel) struck the plane.
The Internal Bomb: Early FBI involvement focused on the possibility of a criminal act, though no explosive residue or "pitting" associated with a bomb was ever found on the wreckage.
The NTSB's Rebuttal: Investigators used complex radar data and wreckage reconstruction to explain that the "streak of light" seen by witnesses was likely the crippled aircraft itself. After the nose broke off, the fuselage pitched upward and continued to fly for several thousand feet while trailing burning fuel, resembling a rocket.
