If you're not measuring MMO, you may pick the wrong size, and it's important to consider size for best function.

Most clinicians don’t routinely measure a patient’s maximum mouth opening (MMO). Still, this quick step dramatically improves comfort and safety when using devices like Mr. Thirsty, bite blocks, or any isolation system.
It also reduces waste by trying a size that doesn't fit.

Reasons why it matters:
◽ Prevents overstretching: Measuring tells you whether the device is supporting the patient or forcing them beyond their typical range.
◽ Protects soft tissues: Oversized devices can press into the palate, pinch the floor of the mouth, or strain the TMJ.
◽ Improves workflow: Correct sizing = more stable isolation + better suction control.

What We Know About Average Mouth Opening
(Values refer to interincisal opening based on sex assigned at birth)

◽ Adult males: ~50–60 mm
◽ Adult females: ~45–55 mm
◽ Children (ages 5–11): ~30–40 mm
◽ Teens: Often 40–50 mm, depending on growth stage
◽ MMO naturally decreases with age due to joint and muscle changes
◽ Anything less than 35 mm in adults may indicate restricted opening or underlying dysfunction

These ranges help you determine whether a patient is within normal limits or likely to struggle with certain devices.

How I Measure and Fit
◽ I measure MMO with a Myofunctional Therapy ruler and take three measurements to get a reliable average
◽ Then I place the appropriate Mr. Thirsty based on that size
◽ If the ideal size pinches or causes palatal pressure, you can custom-trim it by cutting some of the device rather than sizing down
