Matschi talks about holistic connectivity.

Is Continental creating all this or are they buying little companies, like the ones at CES 2016, to help create the future?
The digitalization of mobility is well underway and creating new possibilities to make driving more efficient, safer and more comfortable. The starting point was the comfortable connection of Smart Devices to the vehicle, and the entry of online services and apps into the car. This development will continue due to an ever improving integration. Preferences and individual settings of devices will be seamlessly transferred into the vehicle. In addition, the ever increasing digitalization and connectivity allows the usage of new data sources for the intelligent management of individual and commercial transport. Thus the evaluation of sensor data enables the vehicles in front to predict critical traffic situations, before they lead to a dangerous situation for subsequent drivers. Likewise data from infrastructure can also be used for more safety and convenience. Holistic Connectivity, therefore, networks vehicles worldwide in multiple ways. To the driver, other vehicles, mobile devices, the Internet and to the infrastructure this appears to be seamless. It is a system consisting of interlinked hardware and software components and thereby visible and invisible services are enabled.

Our Holistic Connectivity Car includes a lot of functions that are essential for future mobility, from context based services and an intuitive HMI up to an IP-based architecture. There are however some prerequisites that must be fulfilled to enable new comfort and safety features:

Cars have to learn about context for example. What is the current condition of the car and its driver? How does the car’s environment affect functions and services?

Therefore on-board data, ranging from the car’s diagnostic systems up to a wide range of vehicle sensors, is integrated with cloud-based information like highly accurate traffic information, but also third party information about service stations, the nearest free parking lot and much more. Our Holistic Connectivity car offers intelligent functions which understand the context of a situation and can even anticipate user interaction. An intuitive Human-Machine Interface (HMI) provides a reconfigurable visual interface as well as a natural and adaptive voice dialogue.

Regarding context-based services the Holistic Connectivity car will not only inform the driver when it needs to refill on gasoline, but will also communicate additional needs like replenishing oil or tire pressure. As part of a two-way communication, the gas station will be able to advertise special offers, for example discounts on a car wash, on the car’s head-unit display. Another example for connected services is the integration of smart home services. For example, you can be informed if the parcel deliverer is ringing your home’s door bell and you can contact him directly from your car. The platform is also able to recognize patterns in the driver’s daily routines which can be used in order to control the room temperature or lighting at home. Further possible use cases of the platform include remote vehicle monitoring for applications like remote diagnostics or predictive maintenance, as well as easy and secure car access based on a virtual key and a secure driver identification concept.

Technically, Continental’s Holistic Connectivity demo car is based on the latest technologies and communication standards. Its networking architecture is fully IP-based, its service delivery framework uses HTML5, and the secured connectivity is provided over the high-performance 4G mobile communications network
