The key idea here is to check the 'channels' to find the one with the highest contrast in the area you want to use for a mask - it happens to be the blue channel for the tree in this image.

Since my audio failed to record... at about 2:40 I add a mask to the image I want to be behind the trees. You can use a paint brush or anything else to tweak the mask at this point but the majority of the hard work is done. At 3:18 I unlink the image from its mask, this allows the 'behind' image to be moved around while the mask stays in place.
