When it comes to woodworking and DIY projects, one of the essential materials you need is glue. Two popular types of glue used in woodworking are wood glue and Gorilla Glue. Although they both have the word "glue" in their name, they have some significant differences in composition and application. In this video, we will discuss the differences between wood glue and Gorilla Glue and when to use them.
(1) Wood Glue:
Wood glue, also known as PVA glue (polyvinyl acetate), is a type of glue made from synthetic resin. It is the most commonly used glue in woodworking and is specifically designed for bonding wood to wood. It is water-based, easy to clean up, and dries clear, making it suitable for use on visible joints. It has a strong bond, and once it dries, it forms a rigid bond that is difficult to break.
(2) Gorilla Glue:
Gorilla Glue, on the other hand, is a polyurethane-based adhesive that is designed for use on a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, plastic, and ceramic. It is known for its strong, waterproof bond and is ideal for outdoor projects. Gorilla Glue expands as it dries, filling gaps and providing a strong, tight bond. It is also heat-resistant, making it suitable for use in high-temperature environments.
(3) Differences:
The main difference between wood glue and Gorilla Glue is their composition. Wood glue is a synthetic resin-based adhesive, while Gorilla Glue is a polyurethane-based adhesive. Wood glue is designed specifically for bonding wood to wood and is not recommended for other surfaces. In contrast, Gorilla Glue is versatile and can be used on a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, plastic, and ceramic.
(4) Application:
When it comes to application, wood glue is best for woodworking projects that involve bonding wood to wood. It is easy to work with, dries clear, and provides a strong bond. Wood glue is not recommended for use on other surfaces. Gorilla Glue, on the other hand, is ideal for projects that involve bonding different surfaces like wood, metal, plastic, and ceramic. It is waterproof, heat-resistant, and expands as it dries, providing a tight, strong bond.
