What are the different types of Bone Cancer?

Osteosarcoma, Chondrosarcoma, Ewing and Giant Cell Tumor. As well as Fibrosarcoma and Chordoma. Bone cancer is a very rare form of cancer, with only 2,300 cases per year. It's so rare, researchers haven't gathered enough data to fully understand it. However, a link has been found in high-dose radiation therapy. Varieties of bone cancer occurs in different populations.
Understanding the different types of bone cancer will determine treatment plans. Children are known to be susceptible to bone cancer.

Osteosarcoma

Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer. It usually starts spreading from the legs, pelvis or arms. It's most common in men and mostly affects individuals ages of 10 through 19. However, older adults with related conditions are at a higher risk.

Chondrosarcoma

Most common in older adults over 40 years old. It is the 2nd most common type of bone cancer. Risk increases with age and ages 20 or under are very rare. This variety is distinct in that it forms in the cartilage around the bones.

Ewing Tumor

Sometimes called Ewing's sarcoma, the 3rd most common form. It is most common in individuals under the age of 30. It belongs to a family of tumors which occur in bone. It also occurs in soft tissue (blood vessels), muscle, fat and fibrous tissue. These forms are seen along the spine and in the pelvic region.

Fibrosarcoma

It is most common in older adults. Fibrosarcoma describes cancer that forms in the tissues surrounding bone. Including tendons, ligaments, fat or muscle. Specifically, it forms in these tissues within the arms, legs, and jaw.

Giant Cell Tumor of Bone

Both malignant and benign, is found in the arm and leg bones. It tends to remain localized and will not usually spread. It can be removed through surgery but may return over time. Its most common in young and middle-aged adults.

Chordoma

It's most common in the spine and base of the skull. It's often a slow growing tumor. However, it can spread to the lungs, lymph nodes or liver. It occurs most frequently in adults over the age of 30.

Bone Cancer Symptoms

Symptoms may differ slightly, but generally adhere to similar effects. Bone pain, swelling, and fractures can lead to decreased mobility. Cancer in the lungs can cause difficulty breathing. The most prominent symptom of bone cancer is bone pain. It may crop up late at night, right before bed or when being active. As the cancer develops, pain will increase and grow in duration.

Bone Cancer Treatments

Bone cancer treatment relies on diagnosing the specific type. Hospitals have a wide array of diagnostic tools and treatment options. Surgery for benign and malignant tumors.
