The Reason Japan Attacked Australia

February 19th, 1942. 188 Japanese fighters and bombers fill the sky over Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. Locals mistaking them for American planes returning from an exercise, went about their morning business as usual.

The air raid sirens were sounded... but they were sounded.. too late.
The first group of Japanese planes hit their targets with deadly accuracy.

When it comes to World War II Pacific Theater Battles this one is looked back upon as a turning point for the Allies. The Battle of Midway, The Battle of The Coral Sea, The Battle of Iwo Jima, all can be traced back to Australia's own Pearl Harbour.

Explosions tore through the harbor, sinking ships, destroying planes, and causing widespread chaos. The USS Peary, HMAS Mavie, and several other ships were turned into burning wrecks, with debris and oil scattered across the water.

The defenders on the ground only had a few anti-aircraft guns. The 14th Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery were terribly unprepared. Having not even been allowed to practice firing the guns, they had little effect on the Japanese Zeros and Bombers.

The skies over Darwin were like a nightmare as bombs fell on both civilian and military targets. Hospitals, airfields, and barracks were destroyed, and terrified residents ran for their lives.
