Today we’re taking a listen to the Royer R-10 Hot Rod side by side with their flagship R-121 ribbon microphone. Slap on some headphones and let me know which one you prefer.

I’ve been using the R-10 Hot Rod for a few months now as my go to microphone for guitars (electric and acoustic), it’s been really easy to get great sounds with, but I’ve been curious how it stacks up to the 121. Royer sent this one over to check out and I’ve been working on a few comparisons to show them off.

Despite the price difference (the R-10 Hot Rod comes in at about half the price of the R-121), they each bring their own strengths to the table and you may find which one you prefer changes up depending on the tones you’re trying to capture.

For these clips I’ve got the mics set up at the same distance and are level matched for consistency. There’s no extra eq/compression except for a low cut at 100hz on the guitar tracks.

For me, the biggest differences I noticed would be how they handle the proximity effect. The R-10 Hot Rod has been engineered to have very little, and can be placed right on the amp grille, while I had to back off the R-121 a few inches to avoid a significant bass boost.

The 121 has a thicker bottom end to it, as well as a smoother top end, while the R-10 Hot Rod seems to have a bit more of a push to the midrange. The top end can be a little bit harsher, but when using it as a single mic on an amp, I found I tend to preferred the way it sits in a mix.

All of the electric tones are recorded straight into the @bensonamps Bellringer, the Acoustic is my @martinguitar OM-28. The Royers are plugged into my @uaudio Apollo X4, just the plain preamps with no unison plugins.
