Goose Barnacles are crustaceans normally found attached to hard rock surfaces located in wave stricken cliffs or beaches. They are quiet rare and are mostly found in Spain and Portugal and in some coasts of America and Canada. These barnacles can cost as much as €200 per kilo and in some restaurants in Spain they can be as expensive as €100 a plate! This is mainly due to the huge danger associated with the harvesting of these barnacles.
Luckily for us, we found them attached to a driftwood which may have come all the way from across the Atlantic. Today, for our nature trekking, we decided to check our secret patch for some mussels, razor clams and cockles. To our surprise we were landed with this huge chunk of dead tree with lots of clinging tentacles and dainty painted fingernail-like tips...creepy aliens. Well it didn't really appear that graphic to us since we knew straight away that it was the Goose Barnacles that we have been hunting for in the past year or so... but to some people it was pure alien. Of course, we couldn't pass on the natural bounty of the sea that had freely presented itself to us so we harvested some for tonight's dinner.... and of course saved some for our friends for tasting.
This features a very easy goose barnacle recipe. It is very subtle and it takes away that strong sea flavour to it yet leaving that mild sea salt taste blended with the creamy fresh flavor of the rest of the ingredients.
Hope you enjoy!
