Japan on Sunday marked the 78th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing on Hiroshima, where its mayor Kazumi Matsui urged the abolition of nuclear weapons and called world leaders' notion of nuclear deterrence "folly."

A peace bell rang at 8:15 a.m. local time, the time the bomb was dropped. About 50,000 participants took part in the outdoor memorial ceremony, which included aging survivors observing a moment of silence and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in a wreath-laying ceremony.

"Currently, the road ahead is becoming even more difficult due to deepening divisions in the international community over nuclear disarmament and the threat of nuclear weapons by Russia," Kishida said.

The bomb dropped on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, nicknamed "Little Boy," which killed thousands instantly and about 140,000 by the end of the year.
