Crossing the Iran Azerbaijan Border: A Journey of Chaos and Despair | EP-19

Dear Viewers AoA

The journey from Iran to Azerbaijan by road, specifically through the Astara and Bileh Savar borders, took an unexpected turn due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially planning to use the Astara border, we faced challenges in obtaining accurate information and tickets in Tehran. Eventually, we discovered that Astara was closed for international travelers, and the main route was through the Bileh Savar Border Crossing.

Attempting to reach Bileh Savar, we encountered further obstacles, with no available bus tickets to Ardabil, the nearest city to the border. Consequently, we opted for a taxi, covering the 900km distance from Tehran to Bileh Savar at a cost of $80.

Upon arrival at Bileh Savar, we were confronted with the disheartening news that the border was closed, and we were not permitted to enter Azerbaijan. Despite prior assurances in Tehran, the situation on the ground was different. Confused and disappointed, we explored alternative routes, including the suggestion to reach the independent territory of Naxichevan.

The situation escalated as taxi drivers vied for our business, and border police confirmed the closure. Faced with limited options, we decided to abandon our road trip plan and returned to Tehran, covering an additional 900km within 24 hours. The setback led us to reconsider our travel strategy, and we ultimately booked flights from Tehran to Dubai and then onward to Pakistan.

The dream of a road trip from Pakistan to Azerbaijan was temporarily dashed due to unforeseen border closures and misinformation on the ground. To avoid similar challenges, it's crucial to consult official government sources for the latest border information and travel advisories.
