Mexico has been cracking down on foreigners living in the country on a tourist visa. This is bad news for all the digital nomads and perpetual travelers who have been living in the country located in North America.

Due to the mass influx of people running away from covid restrictions and bad weather, Mexico's immigration is now enforcing stricter laws to protect the country.

If you've been living in the country for the past year, chances are you won't be given 180 days when you come back. It's much more likely that customs gives you x days in the country based on proof of accommodation and onward or return ticket.

Residence requirements have changed as well. People looking to apply for temporary residence need to prove 5,000 x the minimum daily wage which is currently set at 172.87 pesos per day which comes down to roughly $43,000 in savings. You can also prove financial solvency through having an income of at least $2,600/month for at 6 months in a row.

Permanent residency can be acquired for those with a minimum account balance of $173,000 for at least 12 consecutive months (20,000 x the minimum wage). Monthly income of $4,300+ would be sufficient as well. Some embassies and consulates only accept applicants 60+
