A/D Converter shoot out: Tascam UH-7000 vs Metric Halo ULN-8 3D

Finally, there now exists a comparison between 2 of the best sounding audio interfaces ever made.

* Disclaimer* I am a shotty keyboard player, the phrases played here are merely for examples to show how each converter handles attacks, transients, stereo image, and frequency separation :)

For this comparison, I played patches from the Korg Triton Extreme and recorded them directly into the DAW of choice (Reaper). The same phrases were the played back and recorded into each of the interfaces: Uh-7000, and ULN-8 3D.

The levels were matched precisely using direct metering. Any difference you hear in the audio is courtesy of the respective preamp's design.

The A/D for the Tascam UH-7000 is a Burr-Brown chip, while the ULN-8 3D is an AKM chip. Note The newer ULN-8 mkIV (not included in this comparison) uses Burr Brown chips for AD/DA conversion.

The Price? I paid less than $200 for the Tascam UH-7000 (2 preamps), and $3,000 (used) for the Metric Halo ULN-8 3D.

I hope you will find this audio converter/preamp shootout enjoyable.
