More than 15,000 drivers signed a petition calling on the city to pass a law establishing a minimum wage that would hike drivers’ pay by 37%, the Independent Drivers Guild said.

The guild also wants to cap the fees riders pay to the companies at 20%.

The guild cited an MIT study that found a significant number of drivers, who are considered independent contractors, make less than the minimum wage after expenses.

“We reiterate to the Mayor and Taxi and Limousine Commission that we need a livable income and a halt to the race to the bottom, not proposals aimed at protecting Uber's bottom line,” the group said.

The alliance wants the meter that regulated fares in yellow and green cabs to be the minimum rate of pay.

“Uber and Lyft already charge rates to passengers higher than the rate by which they compensate drivers,” the alliance said. “So requiring the regulated taxi meter rate as the floor protects drivers from being undercut.”

Lastly, it’s important that you as a driver advise customers, show them what you are paid at the end of the trip, tell a customer to add 20 to 25% to that and that’s what they should be paying. If more customers get mad about being priced gouged that’s when effective change will happen.
