What is Software?

Software is all the programs that run a computer system. It can be classified broadly as system software and application software. An operating system (OS) is a set of programs for controlling and managing computer hardware and software. It provides an interface between a computer and the user and increases computer efficiency by helping users share computer resources and by performing repetitive tasks for users. A typical OS consists of control programs and supervisor programs.

A personal computer can perform a variety of tasks by using application software, which can be commercial software or software developed in house. In-house software is usually more expensive than commercial software but is more customized and often fits the users’ needs better.
